If we all had our way, camping would always be a fairytale experience.
We’d enjoy just the right amount of sunshine to lift our spirits but not too much that we sweat buckets when we lay down for the night. There’d be a light breeze and just the right amount of shade, and most importantly, the ground would be so perfect that hammering in those tent pegs would be a breeze….But fear not! Let us share with you a few tricks that can help you secure your tent from the elements and enjoy your trip, no matter what the weather is doing.

Protect from elements – Good practices
Set up your tent properly
Many people don’t bother to follow the instructions on how to put up their tent and instead try to figure it all out as they go. This is fine, but often this means that your tent doesn’t perform as effectively as it was designed to.
Make sure you pull out those instructions and follow them carefully, making sure you use everything you should, including all poles, guy ropes, and peg holes.
Also make sure you set your pegs at an optimal angle for better grip: around 45 degrees is usually best. Use a mallet or hammer if you can and don’t bury the entire peg into the ground.
Finally, be sure to position the opening of your tent away from the rain if you can.
Choose your campsite carefully
Selecting the best place to pitch your tent can provide additional protection from the elements.
Find a spot of reasonably level ground that is higher up and drier to help prevent rain flowing into your tent. Also, check whether your campground is prone to flooding or high winds and choose your position accordingly.
It’s also a good idea to seek a sheltered place that can act as a windbreak and protect you from the worst of the wind and rain. Find somewhere that isn’t directly under trees or rocks such as behind a hill or a group of trees.
Point your tent towards the wind
Position your tent, so it faces towards the wind, and you’ll better protect your tent from damage and instead allow the wind to flow over your tent.
Check the local weather forecast or ask at your campground if you’re unsure which direction the wind is coming from.
Use extra guy ropes and pegs
Make your tent extra secure and ease the tension by using extra guy ropes and pegs. They’re easy to get hold of and work exceptionally well.
You can also heap stones around the pegs and poles to add extra support and security if needed.
Dig a trench
If you’re expecting rainy conditions, dig a trench around your tent to protect it from flooding.
It should be between 3-5 inches deep, starting just past the edge of your tent. Angle the hole away from your tent so the water can run away and make sure you place the soil you’ve removed well away from your tent.
Check the weather forecast
Never ever head out for a camping trip, hike or other outdoor activity without first finding out what the weather will be like. Then you can get yourself prepared and take the necessary equipment that will keep you warm, dry, and safe.
Adverse weather conditions such as rain and wind don’t mean that you need to stay indoors and cancel your camping trip. Follow these tips, and you can enjoy your outdoor adventure without your tent blowing away in the wind or flooding.
Which are the Best Camping Tent Locks?
When you go camping, you must keep your safety and security in mind and consider using a tent lock.
These helpful and inexpensive locks attach to the zipper or door of your tent and can help shield you from harm, deter thieves, and also protect your food from critters. This allows you to have better nights’ sleep without worrying about what could be lurking outside.
Of course, no security measure is entirely fool-proof, and you can never let your guard down. But sometimes, a lock can be all that’s required to keep opportunists away.
Here are a few tips on how to choose a good quality tent lock plus which tent lock we recommend.
What to look for in a camping tent lock?
Although you can certainly grab any lock from a random hardware store, it’s always better to find a better-quality lock for your camping trip. Here are some features you should look out for:
- Combination locks- they provide better security, and there’s no key to lose.
- Cable closure- these offer better flexibility and better security than regular padlocks.
- Long wire loop– choose a high-quality extended cable closure, and you’ll find it easier to secure your tent, no matter what its design.

- PEACE OF MIND WITH AN INSPECTION INDICATOR. Know if your luggage has been inspected as soon as you pick it up at the airport with our pop-up inspection indicator. If the TSA has opened your luggage, a button will pop out of the top of the cable lock. Youll know to double check your luggage to make sure nothing has gone missing while youre still at the airport instead of at your hotel or final destination.
- FOOLPROOF COMBINATION SETTING MECHANISM. Easily set your own combination with a simple flick of a switch. With the factory default combination of 000 entered, use a pen to flick the switch to the right. Enter your new combination and flick the switch back to the left. Setting your combination is that easy.
- A SECURE LOCK WHICH WORKS WITH NEARLY ANY KIND OF LUGGAGE. Cable locks can secure luggage which steel shackle locks can not. Pelican cases, gun cases, equipment cases, etc. can all be locked easily and safely with our flexible cable. At an ideal lenght of 4 inches from end to end and a closed lenght of 1.5 inches, SureLocks cable is the ideal size for your travel security needs.
- EASY TO READ DIALS. SureLock uses a white numeral on a black background for our combination dials. These high contrast dials make reading your combination a breeze. No more squinting or searching for glasses as you try to open your locks.
