What are the Best Campgrounds in Glacier National Park?

Perched right at the border between the United States and Canada, this is where you can breathe in the most incredible views of mountain peaks, deep valleys, lakes made by glaciers and 700 miles of the hiking trails.

1. St. Mary Campground

St Mary Campground is one of the best located of all the campgrounds in Glacier National Park, offering a great balance of wilderness and convenience.

Just half a mile from the visitor center where you’ll find food, tours, and even a shuttle service. This campground boasts 183 gorgeous sites which are scattered around open meadows or tucked among gorgeous aspen trees. As it can be pretty hot during the summer months but ask for a sheltered site and you’ll be fine.

You’ll also enjoy facilities like pit toilets and coin-operated showers with warm water, but it can only welcome RVs up to 35 feet and there are no hookups.

The campground is close to two of the most scenic parts of the park, Logan Pass and Going-to-the-Sun Road and it’s open all year round. There is a small fee for camping during the summer months, but it’s free in the winter.

2. Fish Creek Campground

This is another of the larger campgrounds in Glacier National Park which offers 178 sites surrounded by luscious landscapes including cedars, lodgepole pines, and larches.

Boasting 178 sites with space for RVs up to 35 feet, you’ll be perfectly placed for exploring the stunning outdoors when you stay here. It’s also a very calm and friendly place where pets are allowed, and adventure is just waiting for you.

Facilities include token-operated warm showers, flush toilets, potable water and restrooms which have sinks with running water. The Lake McDonald Trail departs from the campground, you’ll be a few miles from Apgar Visitor Center, and you’ll be very close to the Apgar Mountains and Heaven’s Peak too.

3. Glacier Campground

Just five minutes away from the Apgar Visitor Center and right on the Lake McDonald Trail, there is great a campsite with plenty of facilities. They include WIFI, basketball court, barrel train, cable TV, bike rentals, full hookups, and showers.

Right at the gateway to the park, you’ll be surrounded by Flathead National Forest, within easy reach of the cafe and you’ll even be able to access the town very easily.

The sites themselves offer plenty of privacy and space and you’ll feel very much at home when you stay here.

4. North American RV Park & Yurt Village

The views are undoubtedly the best thing about this campsite. Just 5 miles from the west entrance to Glacier National Park, this park is a fabulous place to stay if you’re exploring with your family or want plenty of home comforts on your trip.

Facilities include showers, WIFI, playground, cabins on-site, RV supplies, DVD rentals, ice, firewood, a recreation room, full hookups and much more.

The roads are fully paved and well cared for, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat and you can even bring your pet with you if you want.

5. West Glacier KOA

If you’re a fan of KOAs, you’ll adore this perfectly placed, comfortable campsite where you can be right next to everything you need for a Glacier National Park adventure.

You’ll be close to the Flathead River where you can go inner tubing in the summer. You will enjoy whitewater rafting and river float trips for the whole family, and you’ll have everything you could possibly want to help you soak up this stunning landscape in comfort.

When it comes to facilities, this place certainly doesn’t disappoint.

You’ll love access to everything from two pools, a hot tub, an onsite restaurant, multiple hookups, a patio area with seating and gas grills, WIFI, firewood, and much much more. Of course, the prices are higher than for a basic campground, but you get what you pay for!

6. Apgar Campground

If you’re traveling with kids, you’re going to love this well-equipped and fun campground. It’s scenic enough for the grown-ups to enjoy plus there’s plenty of space for the kids to run around and play.

With very affordable rates and right on the shores of Lake McDonald, you’ll find stunning walking trails, plenty of picnic areas, a marina and plenty of boating fun here. You’ll also be very close to the Apgar Visitor’s Center, the Apgar Bike Trail, and Apgar village.

The facilities are quite primitive with pit toilets and without running water, but that’s part of the fun, right?

7. Many Glacier Campground

Stay here if you’re on your way up to Canada if you want to explore Lake Sherburne or you’re looking for peace and quiet.

Right on the northeast of the park, this National Park Service campground offers showers, restroom facilities including flush toilets and sinks with running water, laundry facilities, easy access to walking trails and a dump station too.

Open from June to September, it’s worth making a reservation before you stay here as places are limited.
